Lazy July Days

Posted 7/1/2009 by Kaye Ireland

What does July mean to you? For me, July in Tennessee brings thoughts of lazy summer days, family picnics, firecrackers, and vacations. Childhood memories of hand cranked homemade peach ice cream, picking wildflowers and blackberries (oh, those chiggers…ok, not every memory is a good one).

We celebrated independence for our country, but us kids mostly celebrated being out of school till fall. Cookouts on the 4th with hot dogs, burgers, my mama’s potato salad and cold sweet tea or lemonade, then croquet and horseshoes kept us busy until the fireworks started after dark.

Growing up here with grandparents living on farms gave me special memories of laundry hanging on a clothesline, spitting watermelon seeds at my cousins, splashing through the creek to cool off and catching fireflies at dusk. It was nearly always hot, since they didn’t have air conditioning, but we made do with fans and opened the windows wide.

Hot summer days in July make me crave the first tomato from the garden, sliced on white bread with mayo, salt and pepper. There’s nothing quite like a home-grown Tennessee ‘mater! Find the nearest roadside stand or farmer’s market to get a basketful soon. And don’t forget the blackberries for a juicy cobbler.

What memories will you create this summer? Take time to tell the fun stories of your past and make new ones with your family and friends. Old Hickory Lake is waiting for you, water sparkling in the sunshine. Cast for a trophy bass or just cruise around. Historic sites, country drives, festivals, community celebrations, farm tours, and more give you opportunities to enjoy your vacation and teach your children.

Your favorite memories will likely be made with people you love, doing simple things you enjoy. Slow your pace, enjoy the journey, and savor the experience.
